In today’s post, we are going to talk about frost, something very important for this time of year.
The formation of ice crystals in plant tissue can also cause significant damage.
The low winter temperatures can damage plants, especially those kept outdoors. In fact, when temperatures drop too much, the main danger is not the branches or the leaves, since they tend to grow back when spring arrives, but the roots, which are the most sensitive part of the plant and, once damaged, are difficult to recover.
Three tips for taking care of your plants in winter
👉🏾 Reduce irrigation. When temperatures drop a lot, the water freezes, which affects the plant’s roots. Actually, did you know that the infiltration and freezing of underground water affects plants more than nighttime frost? Therefore, during winter, it is advisable to water less.
👉🏾 Cover the plants. Bubble wrap, usually used to protect fragile objects, is also ideal for protecting plants. In fact, this material not only protects but also insulates. Anyway, during the day, you should remove the plastic to prevent the plant from suffocating. You should also be careful that the plastic does not damage the leaves and stems, so it is better to place it on tall stakes that hold it.
👉🏾 Group the plants. If temperatures drop too much or the plants are very delicate, it is advisable to group them in the same place, so they can be covered more easily. You can place them next to a wall, forming two or three rows and placing the taller plants in the back.
